“Monotype Imaging” has presented new 2.5 version of Linotype FontExplorer X Pro software for individual users and 1.5 of the FontExplorer X Server software for workgroups.
FontExplorer X Pro 2.5
The previous version of the software (2.0) won the Editors’ Choice Award in 2009. Since that time program developers have been working on improving the software. They’ve presented version 2.5 with expanded capabilities and advanced characteristics. FontExplore X Pro 2.5 allows users to create font sample books without activating fonts in a separate application. Users also can put individual elements into the preview mode and choose the template from the special program menu. (more…)
From 3rd till 7th of May the ninth International Samba Conference will take place in Germany. Göttingen is going to receive the organizers of SAMBA eXperience 2010. Samba has already been called for the papers: the free software implementation of SMB/CIFS and related technologies. Readers of my Wired Windows column in Network World know that I’m not a big fan of the open source movement – at least as far as commercial-grade software is concerned. For that reason, I haven’t paid much attention to Open Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) – (http://nww1.com/go11/0611DSV2A.html), the open source directory service.
As Microsoft charges ahead toward delivering Office XP by midyear, it is falling a bit behind on meeting its Windows XP targets, according to testers.
Although it is common for software companies to miss their internal release schedules, many customers and business partners still look to these schedules for planning purposes. That’s particularly true in Microsoft’s case.

A Scalable, Deployable, Directory Service Framework for the Internet

Despite much activity in the directory service area, the Internet still lacks a comprehensive service. Efforts to mandate a solution have given way to a more practical approach that takes into account the installed base of local and purported global directory services equally so that the process of natural selection may take place (see RFC 1588). This paper describes a directory service and global directory framework that fits within the approach outlined in RFC 1588. It uses proven Internet technology (e.g., the DNS, URLs), learning from the mistakes of its predecessors, namely X.500, LDAP, WHOIS++, and SOLO.
