FontExplorer X Pro 2.5

The previous version of the software (2.0) won the Editors’ Choice Award in 2009. Since that time program developers have been working on improving the software. They’ve presented version 2.5 with expanded capabilities and advanced characteristics. FontExplore X Pro 2.5 allows users to create font sample books without activating fonts in a separate application. Users also can put individual elements into the preview mode and choose the template from the special program menu.

Monotype’s New Softwares

The new software also allows classifying fonts. It’s possible not only to choose and sort the fonts but make smart sets with the keywords: for example, “serif” or “cover sheet”. Linotype offer automatic downloads of all software available fonts.

FontExplorer X Pro main window was also improved. Now it has wider mode. The main window can be set to a transparency mode.

FontExplorer X Server 1.5

New FontExplorer 1.5 version is created for workgroups. It has special lockdown that help administrators to limit users’ access. The software allows hiding Linotype’s integrated font store and the workgroup’s local library.

Administrators are able to set automatic fonts for installation on selected clients. The software has the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. LDAP allows administrators to authenticate users with the help of domain password. Program interface was also changed, now it’s more convenient for handling.

Prices

You can download FontExplorer X Pro 2.5 for $79. Also you can find a free trial version available for 30 days.

FontExplorer X Server 1.5 starts from the price $1.599. It includes 10 client licenses.

OEIPL (Office Efficiencies Pvt. Ltd.) has created a new version of software for Linux and Windows. Company developers have released NTLM authentication/SSO support, LSA authentication support and LDAP / AD User-Group mapping.

In previous version of SafeSquid users had to enter their valid credentials for gaining access to the internet. It depended on what authenticating server the proxy was configured to authenticate users from. New version ntlm-RC2.0 allows using many authenticating servers like an Active Directory, LDAP, Radius, POP3, MySQL, Unix, etc.

SafeSquid Linux software supports NTLM authentication, or Single Sign On. Here clients can identify themselves without sending password to the server.

Windows version 3.2.1.0 can enable/disable NTLM authentication. This option is inactive now and will be available in the next version which is going to be released in January 2010.

Both new SafeSquid software for Linux and Windows allow tight integration with LDAP based Directory Services. New LDAP Sub-System (LSS) make it simple to integrate to AD / LDAP server.

You can contact the company here.

Google Gadget is a convenient thing and most of us use it in open web. But many users don’t tale great features of content inside the firewall. WSO2, a SOA middleware maker, presented the new Gadget Server based on well-known technology.

Paul Fremantle, the founder of WSO2 CTO said: “WSO2 Gadget Server is built upon Apache Shindig, an Apache incubation project that uses Google’s OpenSocial container (the technology behind Google Gadgets) as its core rendering technology to build gadgets”.

You can install the Gadget Server in a data center. Also it’s possible to do it with the help of Amazon web Service. This server is much easier for installation and has improved functions.

Gadgets are just HTML and JavaScript wrapped in a simple XML container. “Get anyone who is a Web programmer, and they can build a gadget.” It creates content feeds, and integrates LDAP or Active Directory services.

Also WSO2 developed the user monitor based on gadgets. It is called Business Activity Monitor or BAM. Gadget Server and BAM are free in sell. The start price is $8.000.

All we live in a jet and IT age. The high-tech technologies are developing so fast that we hardly can follow them. But I know that real IT guys can!

IT specialist is the most needed occupation now. Those guys can do unbelievable things, incredible operations with web and computers. But for them there is always less time for love and relationships. And even if you meet the girl you like she hardly can share your interests: all those IT events, LDAP news, computer movies are so far from her.

But I know the secret how to change the situation. It’s hard to meet your perfect match just on the street or in cafe especially if you have no time to go there. Try dating sites!

Dating sites give everyone the possibility to look for the mate according interests and lifestyle. Read dating sites reviews and you’ll get to know that every person during registration should fill some questionnaires. They have such questions that help to reveal the real interests, values and lifestyle of the person.

But first you have to shoes the very site you like the features, terms and interface. You can get more information and read dating sites comparison here.

Recognize the top 5 leaders of dating market and search the information you need!

Good luck IT genius!

Readers of my Wired Windows column in Network World know that I’m not a big fan of the open source movement – at least as far as commercial-grade software is concerned. For that reason, I haven’t paid much attention to Open Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) – (http://nww1.com/go11/0611DSV2A.html), the open source directory service.

Of course, there’s also the fact that OpenLDAP defines itself as “…an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol.” Last time I looked, LDAP was defined in a series of Internet Engineering Task Force Requests for Comment (IETF RFCs), which is about as “open” (that is, its published for all to use freely) as you can get!

OpenLDAP.org is run by something called the OpenLDAP Foundation, a non-profit organization which is evidently designed to solicit donations for itself. I would like to speak to any of the officers of the foundation but, curiously, they aren’t listed anywhere on the Web that I could find. They appear also to not have telephone numbers, although there is a mailing address (in Redwood Shores, CA – also the home of Oracle. Coincidence?).

Most of the OpenLDAP project is either taken directly from, or derived from on-going work at the University of Michigan (where LDAP originated). The SLAPD (LDAP daemon) and SLURPD (LDAP update daemon) servers are almost direct ports of work from Michigan. There’s nothing wrong with that as it is in the public domain. But there’s little evidence of much new development from the OpenLDAP group.

OpenLDAP did fill a need for an easily obtainable, LDAP-enabled directory service with a low entry price (it’s free – but you had to compile the source code). Shoestring funded start-ups in the directory-enabled applications business could use it for building and testing their software, and even recommend it to clients who didn’t have an installed directory service (or didn’t know they had one). Now that Novell is giving away eDirectory to independent software vendors and Active Directory is included with Windows 2000 servers, those reasons go away.

Since the initial reasons for the OpenLDAP project no longer exist, I’d like to suggest a change. Let’s forget about duplicating commercial efforts to create data repositories and directory services. Instead, let’s focus on creating directory- enabled applications that leverage the installed base of LDAP- enabled directory services. Give users some concrete applications that make use of the authentication, authorization and personalization mechanisms the directory makes available. That would be a public service.

As Microsoft charges ahead toward delivering Office XP by midyear, it is falling a bit behind on meeting its Windows XP targets, according to testers.
Although it is common for software companies to miss their internal release schedules, many customers and business partners still look to these schedules for planning purposes. That’s particularly true in Microsoft’s case.

The software giant has earned a notorious reputation over the years for missing its release targets. And it looks as if it will be business as usual for Windows XP, which is the successor to Windows Millennium Edition and Windows 2000 Professional, formerly code-named Whistler.

But Office XP, the product formerly known as Office 10, seems to be more on track, testers said.

Microsoft announced earlier this month that it plans to brand the 2001 versions of its flagship Windows and Office products with the XP moniker. XP stands for “experience” and is intended to help differentiate the forthcoming Web-enabled versions of the products from the current versions of Windows 2000 and Office 2000.

Various Web sites that closely track Windows developments reported over the weekend that Microsoft is preparing to deliver within days a near-final beta of the next version of Office for Windows, which the company recently designated Office XP. Testers corroborated those reports.

“We’ve just received word that Microsoft is preparing their release of the Corporate Preview Beta (RC 1) to the public,” read a notice posted Tuesday on the ActiveWin site.

ActiveWin added that some testers already have received “Corporate Preview Beta” packages, which are set to expire in August 2001.

Microsoft declined to comment on RC 1 availability. A spokeswoman reiterated, however, that the company is on track to deliver the final, shipping version of Office XP by June.

The same may not be true on the Windows XP side of the house. While testers expected Microsoft to deliver the eagerly awaited Beta 2 version of Windows XP before the end of February, and possibly as early as Feb. 19, it now seems that Beta 2 will not be released until mid-March.

A posting on the WinInfo Windows enthusiast site quotes from what it claims is an internal e-mail message from a Windows program manager to the rest of the Whistler team. The message notified the team that they were not meeting their internal goals, resulting in a two-week postponement of the release of Beta 2.

A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment on any beta release dates for Windows XP, saying only that the company is on track to deliver Beta 2 in the first quarter of 2001. Microsoft still plans to ship the desktop versions of Windows XP for consumer and business users before the end of 2001, she said.

The spokeswoman also would not confirm the authenticity of the memo. Some testers were surprised that Microsoft wasn’t ready to pull the trigger on Windows XP, given that company executives called last week’s press and analyst Windows XP preview its “Windows XP launch.”

“Microsoft probably wanted to include more bug fixes and improve some additional features for Beta 2, and they needed the two-week period to accomplish that,” speculated one Windows XP tester who requested anonymity.

Another tester had a harsher assessment as to what’s holding up Beta 2. “It’s still pretty buggy, the help is still missing, and beta tester feedback has been pretty negative regarding the ‘cartoony’ look of the new UI (user interface),” said the tester, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The tester added that he happened to like the new, streamlined “Luna” interface that Microsoft showed off at the Windows XP preview in Seattle last week.

The WinInfo site noted that Microsoft needs to adhere fairly closely to its Windows XP timetable to be able to get PC makers to preload the operating system release on new computers in time for the 2001 holiday season. Typically, once Microsoft delivers “gold,” or final, Windows code to PC makers, another few weeks to two months is required to get the software preloaded onto the machines.

Despite much activity in the directory service area, the Internet still lacks a comprehensive service. Efforts to mandate a solution have given way to a more practical approach that takes into account the installed base of local and purported global directory services equally so that the process of natural selection may take place (see RFC 1588). This paper describes a directory service and global directory framework that fits within the approach outlined in RFC 1588. It uses proven Internet technology (e.g., the DNS, URLs), learning from the mistakes of its predecessors, namely X.500, LDAP, WHOIS++, and SOLO.

Namespace

A namespace plays a key role in a directory service, allowing collections of related information to be referred to and retrieved. Some services like X.500 make the namespace explicit, requiring complex management and registration processes. Other services like WHOIS++ and SOLO explicitly eschew a hierarchical namespace in favor of a more loosely organized mesh in which information is referred to by its content.

We make the simple observation that the Internet already has a namespace (the DNS) which is scalable, familiar, and has well-established registration procedures. Just as RFC 822 piggybacks on the DNS to define an e-mail namespace, we use the same namespace for directory service.

The advantage is that it’s familiar to users and administrators, compact and efficient, yet mnemonic. The registration of names is free, having already been provided by an established authority.

Navigation

Navigation is the process of determining which server holds a particular piece of information. Given the efficiency with which the DNS translates names to hosts (for email, etc.), we propose using the same mechanism for directory service. We define a DX or Directory eXchange DNS record which is similar to an MX record, except that it points to a host performing directory service for a domain instead of email service.

The advantage is that the DNS is familiar, scalable, proven technology, well-understood by system administrators who already need to know how to deal with the DNS to use and provide other Internet services.

Installed Base

To incorporate the installed base of directory services, we extend the DX record to return Uniform Resource Locators (URL). Clients looking up DX records for a directory name are returned one or more URLs, pointing to the directory service(s) for the domain. They then choose the access method they prefer.

The advantage is the use of proven URL technology as a way of allowing even sites running old protocols to participate with little effort.

Local Searching

Local searching is done using the protocol of a site’s own choosing, allowing us to co-opt existing sites in much the same way the Web has co-opted existing information service protocols. At the same time, sites can migrate to newer, more functional protocols at their leisure.

In addition, we define a local directory service protocol to which sites can migrate. It is based on a stand-alone version of LDAP, the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, one not dependent on X.500. With the addition of referrals and the incorporation of DNS-style directory names, LDAP fits well into this framework.

Non-Local Searching

The problem of searching wide areas that cover multiple directory services is handled in two ways. First, high-level directory servers are deployed which can return URL-based referrals to local directory services.

Second, these servers employ centroid technology to help prune the help prune the search space. Participating sites send centroid data to these servers, allowing global searches to be done efficiently.

Implementability and Deployability

These are perhaps the most important yet overlooked characteristics a directory service need to succeed on the Internet. Our scheme has been designed to remove the barriers to implementation and deployent encountered by other directory services. The registration problem is sidestepped by using the existing DNS namespace. The likelihood of user acceptability is also increased through the use of this familiar namespace. System administrators already have the knowledge necessary to hook their site into the global system. The migration of sites from their existing services is not needed immediately and can take place at the site’s leisure.
